Department Members Invited to 75th Anniversary Iwo Jima Memorial Parade

HARLINGEN, TX – The Marine Military Academy will be hosting the 75th Anniversary Iwo Jima Memorial Parade February 19, 2020, and members of the Marine Corps League are invited.

Sean Downey, Commandant, Rio Grande Valley Detachment has acquired reserved seating for Marine Corps League members interested in attending the parade. There is no fee to attend, but to ensure a premium reserved seat, Downey is requesting members RSVP before December 15.

A social is scheduled immediately following the parade with the Marine Military Academy Staff.

Designed by sculptor Dr. Felix W. Weldon, the Iwo Jima Monument at Arlington Cemetery has become a lasting symbol of WWII, the battle of Iwo Jima, and the Marine Corps. In 1981, the original working model for the Iwo Jima Monument was gifted to the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX located at 320 Iwo Jima Blvd.

One major reason for the gift of the monument was to pay tribute to the Marine who placed the flagpole in the ground on Mount Suribachi, Cpl. Harlon H Block, a Rio Grande Valley native from Weslaco, TX. Block’s gravesite resides directly behind the monument.
